Crickets

The crickets are chirping
underneath the wood

The wood is rotting
I should just rip it out
It would break and splinter and disintegrate
disintegrate into chirping

I reach into the wood, lean down, and place my face in front of the cricket
bulging eyes look back, daring me to do something worth chirping about

I could reach with my trembling hand and pull it apart
no more chirping
Instead, I reach into the wood, lean down and place my face in front of the cricket
and chirp

Crickets are lucky
so I've heard
