Micah's Meadow

All the kids are going down to Micah's meadow
with the broken trees and the wild weeds and the crumbling shelter
haunted by the ghost of a dead raccoon named Albert
At least that's what they say before they laugh and run away

But don't go fiddling around said old Micah from his chair
for there's more than stones and grass and dirt in that cemetery over there
Raccoons and childhood mischief ain't got a place in these bones
See, it's not that I don't have faith in them, they're just things that I used to know

We found this meadow back in the fall of '58
there was nothing but the graveyard and its old decrepit gate
Back then I had a vision of what this life could be
So, we went and built this place before my wife went away

We used to have friends dancing all around this home
the tangos and the waltzes and anything with soul
If there's a heaven I think this is where it ought to be
At least that's what she'd say before she'd smile and dance away

Fact is there ain't never been a raccoon living 'round here
and these spirits that you're speaking of, how I wish they'd appear
This meadow's such a lonely place without 'em
At least that's what I'd say before I left and moved away
